County O40s ladies home match Sunday 16th October

What a great day for Cambridgeshire squash! We hosted matches with neighbouring counties Herts and Essex at Cambridge Squash club. Not an auspicious start with a back injury in the knock-up to Anne but she stayed on court and competed to at least give us all a chance. A team effort was of course needed more than ever and thankfully Nikki, Julie and I managed impressive (dare I say!) 3-0 wins to leave Julia the luxury of losing 1-3 to a very tough opponent but not without quite a battle. So a 3-2 win to start the day – not bad!

The annual tournament was held over the weekend of 24/25 September at Hunts County Squash Club in Hemingford Grey and attracted over seventy competitors ranging from eight to eighteen years old. As last year the winners’ trophy haul was dominated by the host club with a tally of 5; Comberton Village College Squash Club grabbed two, one to Fenland and the remaining to Crown Lodge.

The weekend saw some superb squash across the complete age spectrum. Prizes were donated by Dunlop.

Putting U back into the Club

Stories regarding the imminent demise of Cambridge Squash club have circulated the Squash fraternity for some time and it’s probably fair to say that on occasion these might have been close to the truth.
However since the turn of the year there has been a very noticeable “buzz” about the club.

Match reports from Team Captain Vinod Duraiken

As this was a relegation group, our aim was to finish in the top two. Tough aims as the other teams have great strength in depth. The run up to the weekend was looking good as the squad was reasonably fit and injury free. Unfortunately a glitch on Thursday with Matt Fiveash going down with tonsillitis. Thanks to Alistair Dawson for stepping in at a moment’s notice.
Our Opponents:
Kent (hosts)
Durham & Cleveland

Ladies Inter County Weekend Stage 2 – The Battle for Promotion!

Sunny Winchester Tennis & Squash Club was the setting for the second stage Ladies Inter County weekend. After an eventful journey involving a dodgy sat-nav and even dodgier navigation from the back seat the girls finally arrived on time (a first!), only to be distracted by a certain Greg Rusedski who happened to be playing some exhibition matches!
