Brian Fielding Tournament 2009 Results

This year’s tournament in memory of Cambridgeshire’s much-missed junior coach Brian Fielding was held at Fenland Squash Club on Saturday 12 December. There was a very good turn-out, especially for the morning section, Group A, which necessitated the re-shuffling of some competitors into the more demanding Group B!

Rebecca Moore, who organized the draw, had split each Group into three sub-groups, each of which played a round robin on one of the three courts. At the end of the round robin there was a play-off among the winners of each sub-group (in the case of Group B, where we had more time, the seconds and thirds from each sub-group also played off). By calculating the average number of points each player scored in their matches we were able to arrive at an overall ranking for each group. Given the large number of entries time only allowed for each match to consist of one game, point-a-rally to eleven, but this meant that no-one was left waiting around long for their next match, and the format proved very successful.

The winner of the Group A trophy and a gift token was Scott Drewery of Crown Lodge, with Edward Tucker of Comberton coming second and Joshua Phillips of Hunts County in third place. Group B honours went to Matt Allison of Crown Lodge, with Gregory Goodwin of Hunts County runner-up and the tireless Scott Drewery in third place. Scott thus managed the tournament triple of winning a trophy, a gift token AND a box of chocolates – not bad for a day’s work!

Many thanks to Rebecca for her customary hard work both in preparing and supervising the tournament, to our hostess Glynis Fenwick for coping so well with the throng of players and parents, especially around “change-over” time at 12.30, and to Matt Allison, who spent the morning making a very efficient job of organizing play on one of the courts.
