County O40s ladies home match Sunday 16th October

What a great day for Cambridgeshire squash! We hosted matches with neighbouring counties Herts and Essex at Cambridge Squash club. Not an auspicious start with a back injury in the knock-up to Anne but she stayed on court and competed to at least give us all a chance. A team effort was of course needed more than ever and thankfully Nikki, Julie and I managed impressive (dare I say!) 3-0 wins to leave Julia the luxury of losing 1-3 to a very tough opponent but not without quite a battle. So a 3-2 win to start the day – not bad!

We all stayed and watched Herts dominate over Essex winning 5-0, a result that hides some tough matches.

Then it was our turn to try and get aching and stiffening bodies moving again! Thankfully with Carol’s new legs and fantastic efforts all round Carol and Julia had 3-0 wins, I had a 3-1 win and Julie lost a close battle 2-3. Nikki’s epic battle with a strange schizophrenic opponent can’t escape comment, she did extremely well to stay focussed, to ignore all the Oscar performance antics and come back from being well down in the 5th to close it out 9-6 in the decider – an extra special win! So a 4-1 win to add to the morning’s win. So we won the day convincingly with 34 points, Herts 2nd with 26 and Essex bringing up the rear with 10.

So many thanks to the team for their efforts both in terms of superb squash and help marking and hosting and to Histon Rd and in particular Reka and Mhairi for their help on the day and with organising the food etc – a day to remember! Roll on next half, though it’ll be tough as we play Surrey (last year’s winners) and Kent! Keep fit everyone please!

Team was:
Me (Sarah Howlett), Julia Dolman, Anne Walton, Nikki Mounter, Julie Miller and Carol Hargreaves.
