Twelve juniors from five Cambridgeshire clubs attended a Young Leaders Course at Comberton Village College Squash Club on Sunday 27 January 2008.
The course was open to any junior aged 14 or over, and aimed to teach basic leadership and communication skills, to qualify the juniors to assist at coaching sessions and to provide them with ideas for coaching younger players, with a strong emphasis on Mini-squash.
The tutor was Level 4 Licensed Coach Sue Woodhouse, who was recently awarded the prestigious Dyson Award for outstanding contributions to the development of coaching in the UK (Sue is the first squash coach to have won this award). The course was fully funded by England Squash and thus free of charge to the participants.
At the end of the day Sue pronounced herself well satisfied with the commitment and progress of the pupils, each of whom should shortly receive a Young Leaders certificate.
At the end of the course they were also presented with tee-shirts by Matt Asbrey of Living Sport on behalf of England Squash. Thanks are due to Matt for his help in arranging and promoting the course, and to Sue for making it so lively and informative on the day.
